Unicef – Latrine in Malawi Africa

Supported by UNICEF, Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) was introduced to Malawi in 2008. By December 2009, about 1,000 villages in 12 districts had been triggered, with Mchinji having the highest number at 325. A community is considered “triggered” when its residents are so disgusted by the practice of open defecation (through education by other residents) that they are ready to do something about it. Of these, 346 villages were declared free of open defecation.

Terry Fox

Terry Fox was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated 15 centimetres (six inches) above the knee in 1977. While in hospital, Terry was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients, many of them young children, that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He called his journey the Marathon of Hope. After 18 months and running over 5,000 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. Terry passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age 22. To date, close to $500 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry's name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.

The foundation has never refused a wish to an eligible child. Each wish is as unique as the child who makes it. A wish can range from a personal computer or a home theatre system, to travel or a meeting with a celebrity.
